The
History of the ICCC...
In
1976 the Federation of Italian-American
Organizations of Greater Houston was
formed as an umbrella organization,
which coordinated the activities of
more than 20 Italian Clubs in the
greater Houston area. The Federation
became a non-profit organization with
a 501(c)3 status in 1982.
In 1988, with the proceeds from its
earliest fund-raising efforts, the
Federation purchased the historic
Milford House, in the Houston’s
Museum district, for its’ headquarters.
The house became known as the Italian
Cultural and Community Center. Since
it’s opening the Center has
activity served three groups: Italians
who have relocated to Houston, Americans
of Italian descent, and Italophiles
(those interested in Italy and it’s
culture). Managing the diversity of
interests and needs has sometimes
been difficult but the continued success
of the Center attests to the advances
that Italian Americans have made in
Houston.
For members of Houston’s Italian-American
Community, many of whom become active
Federation members, the acquisition
of the Milford House was the realization
of a dream. But for Houstonians of
all backgrounds, the Italian Cultural
and Community Center is the Federation’s
gift of culture to the City of Houston.
